Veyron vs Chiron.jpg
The modern Bugatti company has been crafting the fastest hyper sports cars for over two decades now, and the Chiron and Veyron are two of their most acclaimed models. Both represent the peak engineering of their times, and now that both have officially ceased production, they’ve passed on to legendary status in the world of automobiles.

So, if you happen to have a couple million dollars lying around, which one should you buy? Let’s compare their legendary specs to see how they stack up.

Bugatti Chiron vs. Veyron: History

Before we go into their respective stats, let’s take a second to check out how they shaped the performance car world as we know it.

The Bugatti Veyron has its beginnings back in 2000, when the current-era Bugatti marque was just taking off. It was designed to be the first modern production Bugatti car, but it would take until 2005 for it to finally begin being assembled and shipped to buyers. When it was finally released, many auto industry critics hailed it as one of the most impressive cars they’d ever seen, and it went on to break multiple track records. In total, 450 Veyron models were produced between 2005 and 2015, making it one of the rarest vehicles in the world.

After retiring the Veyron, Bugatti set its sights on creating a machine that would surpass the seemingly impossible standard they’d set. In 2016, they unveiled the Bugatti Chiron, which would go on to be even faster than its predecessor. Like the Veyron, it saw a very limited run, with only 500 units made. In 2024, Bugatti announced that the Chiron L’Ultime would be the last, marking the end of the era and one of the last Bugatti vehicles to house the W16 engine.

Bugatti Chiron vs. Veyron: Engine and Performance

Despite having different names and performance capabilities, both cars have the same general engine layout: the almighty Bugatti 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 engine. This powerhouse gets its name from its general W shape, which essentially functions like two V8 engines linked side-by-side.

Although they share a similar powertrain, their power outputs differ dramatically. The original Veyron created about 987 horsepower, while later models like the Veyron Super Sport maxed out at 1,183 horsepower.

Because the Chiron came later, it benefited from advancements in engine technology, which increased its max power significantly. The first Chiron models cranked out 1,479 horsepower, and more recent models had as much as 1,578 horsepower.

Bugatti Chiron vs. Veyron: Top Speed and Acceleration

Because of their wildly different power specs, it’s no surprise that the Chiron is a lot faster than the Veyron. In fact, because of its downright intimidating amount of power, Chiron models are electronically limited to 236 mph (380 km/h). However, using the special Speed Key, the max speed can be increased to 261 mph (420 km/h). The Chiron Super Sport 300+ was able to reach a speed of nearly 305 miles per hour when driven by a professional (don’t try that at home, kids).

Still, the Veyron is no slouch when it comes to speed. Later models like the Veyron Super Sport had a top speed of 267 mph (431 km/h), setting a Guiness World Record at the time. Both the Chiron and Veyron are also capable of doing a 0 to 60 run in well under 3 seconds.

Bugatti Chiron vs. Veyron: Design and Interior

Both hyper sports cars have a mid-engine layout and a two-door body style, optimized for maximum aerodynamic efficiency and downforce. This serves to hold the vehicle to the road while traveling at blinding speeds.

Because each Bugatti is hand crafted and personalized to its owner, no two models look alike. However, the Veyron and Chiron can be distinguished by different steering and center console layouts, with the Chiron having a simpler and more streamlined series of dials to control things like windows and climate control.
