Bugatti Tourbillon

Bugatti’s business is producing drivable icons – works of automotive art that redefine performance and luxury while capturing the minds of enthusiasts around the world. They’ve mastered their process over the last 115 years and Bugatti’s efforts have produced an unmatched portfolio of racing champions and unparalleled road-going vehicles. We’d happily run through them, but you’re here to learn about Bugatti’s recently announced next piece of mobile sculpture: the Tourbillon.

It's difficult to frame the Tourbillon properly without first acknowledging two of Bugatti’s standout predecessors to the Tourbillon: the Veyron and Chiron.

The Veyron screamed onto the world’s thoroughfares in 2004 and shook the concept of automotive performance as the first road going hyper car with more than 1,000 horsepower. (1,001 thoroughbred steed, to be precise!)

In 2016 Bugatti threw the conventions of luxury and performance into a centrifuge and extracted the purest concentration of speed yet: the 1,500 horsepower Chiron.

The Veyron and Chiron were both powered by a quiver inducing 8.0 liter, 16 cylinder, quadruple turbocharged engine, but that engine won’t be what powers the Tourbillon. This new vehicle is an entirely different and snarling performance animal.

So, what is there to know about the new Bugatti model? Read along with this blog to find out all the cool details of the Bugatti Tourbillon.

What is the Meaning of the Name of this Newest Bugatti Model?

The name of this new Bugatti dream vehicle succeeds in multiple ways. It draws immediate attention and questions simply by existing :Tourbillon. It’s a French word which evokes the home and history of the Bugatti brand while also being fun to say. “Toor-Bee-Yawn!”

The Tourbillon is also a revered item in the refined world of high-end watchmaking – a device invented in 1801 by a Swiss-born horologist named Abraham-Louis Breguet that is revered as the ultimate in watchmaking over 200 years after its creation.

That French word tourbillon also directly translates into English as whirlwind or vortex, which is exactly what the Tourbillon will deliver upon the roadways of Miami when its lucky owners prompt it for acceleration.

What Do Enthusiasts Near Indian Creek Road Need to Know About the Bugatti Tourbillon?

The Tourbillon will not be powered by the W16 engine and its four turbochargers, but instead propelled into history by an all-new V16 engine which is naturally aspirated, displaces 8.3 liters, and was developed with the help of the noted Cosworth engineering company. That V16 engine is boosted to extreme power with the help of three electric motors: two driving the front e-Axle and one mounted to the rear axle. The combined system output of these 4 powerplants blesses the Tourbillon with 1,800 horsepower. The V16 alone delivers 1,000 horsepower while the three electric motors work in unison to deliver the remaining 800 horsepower. The high-tech engine is constructed from lightweight materials which limit it to a flyweight-like 252 kilograms.

The Tourbillon’s electric motors are driven by a 25 kWh 800V battery which is oil cooled and located behind the lucky passengers. There is intense power production in the Tourbillon, but the battery’s high capacity grants this new Bugatti an all-electric range of circa 37 miles / 60 km.

The chassis of the Tourbillon is entirely new and, much like the engine, is shockingly light weight thanks in part to its T800 carbon composite construction. Mult-link forged aluminum suspensions are in place in both the front and ear of the Tourbillon, and 3D-printed parts help reduce suspension weight by 45% compared to the Chiron.

Bespoke elements find their way into the brake-by-wire system of the Tourbillon with a moveable pedal box which blends into the non-linear vehicle controller. The advanced Tourbillon brakes are attached to bespoke Michelin Pilot Cup Sport 2 tires that measure 285/35 R20 in front and 345/30/R21 at the rear. You’ll need the grip of these massive tires to effectively apply the massive power of this next Bugatti.
