A Bugatti isn’t just a regular sports car. It’s a hyper sports car, designed to reach speeds most auto manufacturers can only dream of, while being personalized to each Bugatti owner’s exact specifications. That means that every piece of our vehicles is made by hand, rather than by machines that have every measurement programmed into them. But if humans handle every part of the production process, that leaves room for error. So how can every Bugatti be produced by hand while still being an extremely high-quality vehicle?

Well, the short answer is that every Bugatti is designed to meet exact parameters that ensure speed, safety and comfort. But the details of this answer are fun to learn about, so let’s go over the long answer.

Designing a Bugatti Model: The Bigger Picture

Designing a great Bugatti starts with a broad scope determined by how the design team wants this model to perform. According to the Bugatti Director of Design, Frank Heyl, “form must always follow performance.” The engineers must figure out what elements they want to focus on. Do they want to focus on how much downforce the vehicle will deal with? Do they want it to break speed records? What kinds of design curves and internal parts will it take to achieve those goals?

These are all the questions the design team must answer when they design a Bugatti Tourbillon or a Bolide, or any other hyper sports car. Once those questions are answered, the engineers begin designing the car accordingly, figuring out all the specifications to make it perform well with its aligned goals while keeping it elegant.

Metrology: Finding Everything’s Balance

Once the designs are set, production begins, and every engineer and specialist craftsperson working on the production has to make sure every vehicle ends up as fast and elegant as it’s meant to be. That’s where metrology comes in.

Metrology is the science of measurement, a form of physics that ensures that everything is just the right size and dimension to run as well as a Bugatti should. Bugatti employs metrologists to assess every single component that goes into a Tourbillon, a Bolide, a Chiron, or any other vehicle that comes out of the Bugatti factory in France.

What exactly does a metrologist do? They measure everything with combinations of manual tools, state-of-the-art 3-D scanners, and complex software. All this equipment measures external and internal Bugatti parts accurately within 0.005 millimeters. Bugatti’s metrologists painstakingly measure each piece, and if any part deviates from the design, dimension, and shape it should have, they determine the root cause. The metrologists then contact the engineers and craftsmen to let them know what has gone wrong so it can be resolved. All three groups work closely together and bring in internal specialists and external suppliers to help them find the best solutions to these problems.

Why Does This Process Matter?

This process is interesting to learn about, but why should you care? Well, all Bugatti vehicles are custom made, so when you purchase one, you’re receiving something made solely by humans, and it’s guaranteed to be one of a kind. It’s great to know that the vehicle you invest in has been meticulously designed and checked to ensure all its parts fit together perfectly and run as well together as they possibly can.
